Let's Move! Outside Summit
Reconnecting Youth with Nature for Play and Service
Last summer, the YMCA of the Triangle was asked to lead the Let’s Move! Outside initiative in Raleigh as part of a nationwide effort to inspire millions of children to play, learn, serve and work outside. The YMCA convened a Steering Committee that has narrowed the focus locally to the pillars of play and serve, and it has expanded the reach beyond Raleigh to include all of Wake County.
Now AHA and the YMCA invite community leaders in parks and recreation departments, youth development, conservation, health advocacy, education and stewardship to be part of the conversation to reconnect our youth with nature for play and service to their schools and communities. All who care about the emotional and physical well-being of youth in Wake County are invited.
Registration and Coffee/Tea: 8:15-8:30 am
Meeting: 8:30-10:30 am
Local success story snapshots followed by discussion. Get inspired and take action!
-
Knightdale: Special events are a huge draw to get youth and families to parks. Learn about how local community partners join forces with Knightdale’s Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department to host Psyched About Bikes each year. Hear from Megan Thornton, Recreation Program Supervisor, about this event highlighting National Bike Month each year and providing safety education to get kids out riding their bikes more often.
-
Cary: Town of Cary’s 310-acre Bond Park is home to a community center, athletic fields, a lake and boathouse, a ropes challenge course, amphitheater, compost education center, playgrounds and more. Sam Trogdon, Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Senior Operations & Program Supervisor, will highlight the explosive growth of the park’s outdoor camps for youth and the growing number of family-oriented programs that are bringing more people to the park.
-
Raleigh: About 3,500 of the 13,000 volunteers involved in the City of Raleigh Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department volunteer services program are children and youth. Ashley Deans, Resource Development Manager for the department, will share highlights of programs that repeatedly bring young volunteers to serve in the city’s 200 parks and 120 miles of greenway.
-
Measuring Physical Activity: There are thousands of public, outdoor, online streaming webcams, which offer an unobtrusive, low-resource way to capture use of place and measure physical activity. Learn about the research showing the effectiveness of this scalable method in evaluating program, policy, and place change from Aaron Hipp, PhD, Associate Professor of Community Health and Sustainability, Dept. of Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management at NC State University.
-
Kids in Parks Prescriptions: Kids in Parks, a Let’s Move! Champion of Change awardee, is an expanding network of family-friendly outdoor adventures called TRACK Trails, which include hiking, biking, geocaching and paddling trails, as well as nature trail disc golf courses. Learn about the success of the TRACK Rx program from Jason Urroz, Director of Kids in Parks at the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation, and how pediatricians locally and statewide are partnering with Kids in Parks to prescribe outdoor activity.
